SEO Checklist for 2017

Hi Guys, I’m listing out all the SEO on-page, off-page, content and SMO elements that you should consider while doing SEO / Digital Marketing for your website in 2017. Hope this will help you in managing your SEO project and will improve the performance of the website. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section below.

Pre-SEO Tasks/Checklist

  • Project URL – How you will work without that e.g. www.myguestpost.org
  • Brand Name – To keep it consistent i.e. “My Guest Post”
  • Responsive Site – Check your site mobile version with tools like https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ or browser add ons like ‘Responsive Web Design Tester‘ etc.
  • Mobile Usability Errors – To check if the site is good on mobile. This can be observed in Google Webmaster / Search Console tool.









  • Correct Address – Again to check the NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) consistency. It should be same across the online platforms.
  • Accessible to Crawlers – If not visible to the crawler, it won’t rank in SERPs.
    • Check the robots.txt file, it should not have ‘Disallow: *’ or ‘Disallow: /” tags.
    • Check for meta robots tag for ‘nofollow, noindex‘.
    • Try “site:myguestpost.org” in Google, you will get indexed pages of the site.
    • Try “cache:myguestpost.org” you will get the cache status of the page.
  • Website Analysis – Read my post on SEO Analysis – What, Why How?
  • Benchmark Report – This is the report that contains the stats or data that shows the current status of the website. Yes, the status before you starts your SEO/Digital Marketing.
    •        PR (Page Rank) – Many tools as available
    •         Alexa traffic – Check on Alexa.com
    •         Organic, Referral, Social Traffic – Use Google Analytics Account
    •         Pages Indexed in Google – Check “site:domain.com
    •         Pages Indexed in Bing
    •         Domain Backlinks – Check using MajesticSEO or any other tool
    •         Age of Site – Whois records will help
    •         Domain Expiry Date – Use Whois
  •     Competitor Research and Analysis
  •     Keyword Research and Analysis
  •     Create a report of site check for broken links/orphan pages, unique home page, duplicate URLs, redirect issues, etc..
  •     W3C Validation Report – Use tools like W3C Validator
  •     Site Load time Check and Report – Google Page Speed Insight or Pingdom or GMetrix
  •     Error Page Report (Broken Links) – Broken Link Checker, Xenu, SEOFrog
  •     Canonical/Duplicate pages – Check manually if possible or use tools like Xenu, SEOFrog to know the same pages with multiple versions

Analytics and Webmaster Setup

  • Tracking code – like Google analytics
  • Webmaster to see the crawling messages
  • Google analytics and webmaster linking
  • Adwords link with analytics account
  • GA code each page
  • Advertiser and demographics reporting enable in analytics
  • IP filtration
  • Spam filter applied
  • Bot filtering
  • Goal tracking
  • Call event tracking

Lead / Goal Tracking & Testing

  • Landing page for tracking
  • Form validation
  • Does it has captcha code – to avoid spamming
  • Client email id linked to it
  • Secondary email id in CC / BCC
  • If client is getting the test mails/contact form fills

Basic On-Page Factors

  • Robots.txt implemented correctly
  • Disallow payment, login, other folders
  • Canonical issue
  • Meta Tags Optimized for Each Page
  • Heading Tags Optimized for Each Page
  • Good URL Structure / Search Engine Friendly URLs
  • If site using https:// (secured level URL) structure
  • Breadcrumb Navigation
  • URL redirections check
  • Site Speed Test

  • Nofollow on external links
  • External links (Not going to spam or FFA, No follow used where appropriate)
  • Optimize Related topic or product/service links, upselling and cross-selling links

  • Blog Section
  • Press Section – If required
  • Site Hierarchy / Navigation
  • Customized 404 Error Page
  • Are pages same as per the old (history) records

  • Local Listing Page for Each Location (If more than 1 physical address)
